About My Art

MY JOURNEY AS AN ARTIST AND MORE ABOUT MY ART

ABOUT ME

I have always loved being creative and had various creative interests. From a very young age I was (and still am) usually working on some kind of project or attempting a new art style or medium - often with mixed results.

I've tried my hand at most easily accessible mediums - including air dry clay, pencil sketching, weaving, macrame, knitting and sewing, mosaic, collage, the arrangement or observation of 'found objects', interior design, jewellery making and digital art and photography. I'm always looking for opportunities to try new things and whilst I now predominantly work in traditional mediums like watercolour and charcoal my results are sometimes far from traditional.

I'm relatively confident in several styles of drawing and painting which I feel I am developing well but like most artists I'm constantly working to become more self assured in my ability to create beautiful or meaningful things, I recognise a lot of room for improvement and am very eager for opportunities to sharpen my skills.

EMPLOYMENT

I've been lucky enough to have been working part time on my art since early 2019. I now take on various creative projects on a freelance / commission basis of many types of artwork, from individual hand made greetings cards for one off clients to literary illustrations for authors.

I am always looking for new challenges and commissions and have a particular interest in any, more stable, long term opportunities. Until then I am thrilled to work with my current clients, have the chance to explore a vast amount of creative avenues and advance my creative skills by committing myself to the opportunity I currently have.

I hope you will join me in my journey to become a skilled artist by exploring my work, offering feedback and considering whether you can utilise my skills either as an individual or an organisation.

MY STYLE

I currently display, advertise and sell my art across several sites including many of the social media and sales websites found on the 'Social sites' page of this website.

My work spans a huge variety of styles and to suggest it is eclectic would be a huge understatement, day to day I bounce between light hearted illustrations intended to appeal to kids (and big kids) to darker emotional or more conceptual pieces.

Because of the vast division in my work I operate under the names 'PetiteMort' for my more adult works and 'Petitart' for my more fun filled projects -of course I have many pieces that happily explore both aspects, these are often cross posted across both 'brands' so keep an eye out. If you're interested in a particular style, artist or concept please get in touch!

Read on to find out more about my artistic styles and see some examples of both kinds of work.

PETITEMORT

Fascinated by psychology, sexuality, love and death 'La Petite Mort' seemed a suitable phrase to frame some of my darker works which explore these themes.

I use the PetiteMort 'brand' to share some of my more abstract styles alongside some more refined portraiture and classic works. I'm fascinated the the study of facial expressions, peoples perceptions of themselves and thoughts about how they want to be perceived and their relationship to others.

I also occasionally use this platform to share typically expressive or humorous quick studies and doodles which are often unrefined chaotic works without direction.

PETITART

Petitarte - a name chosen to parallel to the name of my much more grown up art site 'Petitemort' I wanted to play upon the French 'Petite' meaning 'small' which within the context of Petitart is more playfully referring to youth and the inner child - both persistent inspirations for the kind of artwork shared under the 'Petitart' umberella. I use this platform to share more family friendly art - exploring lighter themes, more humorous designs, portraits of families and animals and illustrations intended for children and young adults.

BUYING MY ART

I sell a range of unique works and never take prints from my originals unless otherwise stated. When you purchase a piece of my artwork it will usually be unframed and carefully packaged (often rolled in a tube) then delivered by first class recorded delivery to your home with an invoice and artists statement.

If you are interested in a piece which is outside of your budget then please consider contacting me to make an offer or even to commission a similar piece at a more affordable price.

Please check out my social media sites to see what's on sale or contact me if you're interested in a commission.

COMMISSIONS

I currently work predominantly with individuals on commissioned pieces.

Most of my work is conducted online through informal chats with potential clients although I am always happy to conduct a face to face or video consultation when appropriate or desired.

I work best when given a loose brief with some freedom to explore mediums or creative styles but I also work to more structured briefs, in particular when a client would like a work in the style of one of my existing pieces or has a specific requirement for a commercial project.

For portraits of people and animals I almost exclusively work from photographs - using one main photo for reference and additional photos to inform me more about the subject.

I am happy to work within deadlines or to timescales, most works are complete within 2-5 days.

PRICES

My pricing can range from £3 to £300 and I'm always happy to work around a clients budget.

Art should be for everyone and it's usually possible to compromise on size or detail and still create a meaningful or impactful piece.

All charges including materials, time, framing, postage and packaging are always included in the quoted price.

As a very rough guide:

Custom greetings cards cost between £3 and £10 depending on size and design (multibuy options are available to reduce cost)

Portraits start at around £10 for an unframed sketch on A4 paper, for a large detailed or coloured portrait in A3 you can expect to pay around £50-70 depending on detail and framing options,

Custom designs on shoes or homewares start at around £15 for simple designs up to around £40 for detailed work.

Watercolour artworks on standard a4 watercolour paper start at £20 unframed up to around £55 for a mounted and framed piece.

Pricing and advice regarding digital work, including media packs, is coming soon but in the meantime please message me for details.

RECIEVING YOUR ART

Upon completion of the work a client may choose whether to see a photograph of the piece or wait to see it in person.

I always give clients the choice to have a work signed or unsigned unless I strongly feel otherwise and an accompanying artists statement is available on request.

Artwork is available for collection from Romford (which will usually make your quoted price cheaper) or can be posted by recorded delivery to any address (additional postage charges may apply if outside of the UK but this will be discussed prior to taking the work)

In the majority of cases it's possible for a client to ask for minor changes to be made to the finished product which are always completed as part of the original price.

In some cases, such as with hand painted wearable items or homewares, a guarantee of sorts is provided along with an artists statement informing the client of discounted repair or replacement of goods or free touch ups to a piece should it wear in the natural course of its life.
